Their dedication and investment of time is inspiring, and we are excited to see the fruits of their efforts in the 79th session. Although we are disappointed that our session did not take place, the quality of the program will not be damaged. We are committed to an excellent program in We will continue this tradition and provide a once-in-a-lifetime experience to our participants for many years to come.

It is a week-long journey through a great many things that make us who we are; leaders, friends, students, athletes, and most of all citizens of our respective cities, towns, and our great state. The journey can be described as the most challenging and most rewarding and fun experience by those who have already participated in the program.

This program is designed to teach boys that the American form of government is stronger and more vital in today's world of struggle than ever before. It teaches that the American people have no more precious possession than that great document, the Constitution, which at once safeguards and transmits to posterity those principles of the great American heritage -- justice, freedom and democracy under God. Approximately boys from every part of Wisconsin will come to Badger Boys State this year.

Upon arrival at the Ripon College campus, boys will be grouped into cities and counties, which will form a "51st state. The boys themselves will elect their own municipal, county and state officials. Use humor. Humor to be effective should be self-deprecating. Trashing someone else, even if funny, will make at least one enemy.

Know your counselors: These men are experts. They are all volunteers, they believe in the value of this program. They are very good at what they do. Pay attention: Take classes that will help you learn.

Ask questions. There are no stupid questions but there are a whole bunch of stupid answers. Once you learn something you are armed with something that no one can take from you. Push beyond your comfort zone: We all want to be comfortable. At Boys State you have the opportunity to try new ideas, to take chances, to find out what works for you. You can speak in front of groups and hone your speaking skills. You only have so many coins: Really good politicians know that they have a limited amount of currency to spend.

Every time you take a position you spend some of your coins. Pick your verbal fights carefully. Once you have used up all your coins, no one bothers to listen to you. During the week, Badger Boys State participants learn how government works by creating their own mock city, county and state governments.

They also host a public tribute to veterans one night. Students will have daily classroom activities in Centennial, Hibbard and Schneider halls. Schmidt has rich memories of attending Boys State in Minnesota before his senior year of high school. I was excited to be around other young men with similar interests.
