Time Out This is probably one of the easiest ways to train your cat. It works best with undesirable behavior like jumping on counters, climbing curtains or scratching furniture. When you notice them engaging in these activities, pick them up and gently remove them from the room. Ideally, you should place them in a room that is not easy for them to get out of. The key is to make the time-outs short and speak to them in a firm voice.
If your cat is being overly playful by climbing up your legs and using you as their personal jungle gym, then you can be the one to leave the room. Booby Trap This method works well if your cat is constantly jumping up on counters or other surfaces. He will soon associate this with jumping and will learn not to go to that area.
Make sure the booby trap you build is not made of heavy objects, or objects that may harm him. Be prepared to clean up the mess once you get home!
Diversion Is your cat eating your plants again? Are they enamored by the shiny ornaments on your Christmas tree and the presents underneath it? Try diverting their attention with a favorite toy or activity that will divert their attention away from their naughty behavior. If you do this often enough, they will forget all about those plants!
Note: Some plants can be extremely toxic to cats such as Poinsettias so keep these away from them. If they start to chew, give them a light spray to let them know that they are delving into unacceptable territory! Why Do Cats Misbehave? Most times, what you see as your cat misbehaving is just them expressing their natural inhibitions as animals.
That is why it is not advisable to punish them for what nature has made them when you could help them adjust instead. At other times though, the cat has just picked up a bad behaviour from nowhere and started to run with the idea. Some of the fault might even have been on your part as to not having nipped the behaviour in the bud earlier.
This is not a blame game though. Depending on what is making your cat misbehave, you will want to approach the discipline with utmost care and patience. For instance, for that cat who believes the couch is a scratching post?
Drape a loose blanket over the arm of the sofa. The fabric will fall each time they try to sharpen their claws, creating a subtle form of cat discipline.
Foiling the behavior will drive them to the sturdy, reliable scratching post. Is your cat a counter-jumper? Your cat learns to avoid the area — especially if you provide a cat-safe place for them to climb as an alternative. Professional cat trainers do exist. Never give up and accept bad behavior. No one likes putting up with bad behavior.
Luckily, most of the time, those unwanted discipline problems clear up with a little work. Take a quick look through the house and make sure you are not part of the problem. Slowly, over time, your cat will fall in line.
Check with the vet Surprising as it sounds, the source of a lot of cat misbehavior has roots in medical conditions. Review the household People get frustrated with scratched furniture, cats climbing the curtains, and accidents outside of the litter box. Is the litter — or box — the type your cat prefers? Are there enough scratching posts? Do you have cat trees to provide elevated climbing places? Are you playing with your cat frequently enough?
Withdraw and redirect One of the simplest ways to punish your cat is to withdraw or redirect their attention.
