Some roles perform very similar duties, yet require very different licenses and training depending on the role. The differences in the work performed by PCAs and CNAs are directly related to the differences in licensing between the two roles. PCAs are generally considered a caregiver role, and while CNAs also largely work as caregivers, their role is also that of an entry level healthcare provider. CNAs are usually certified in first aid and emergency care, and are expected to recognize when a resident is in immediate danger and provide emergency measures when appropriate.
Basically, the legislation allows nursing homes to hire PCAs, and provide them with an in-house training program that will consist of at least 16 hours of education.

This provision for additional training and skills is where PCT programs come in. Some programs only allow those who have already trained as CNAs to enroll.
PCT programs vary in length depending on the state, but they usually take at least several months to complete. Some employers may opt to provide the required training and validation of competence required to elevate their CNAs to PCTs. They will also receive hands-on instruction in procedures expected of PCTs and will usually need to complete an externship. Students must practice these skills for a specific number of hours before certification.
Florida requires that CNAs either complete a certified training course and pass a competency exam or challenge the exam without training. CNAs must be 18 years or older and able to pass a background check. Because some PCA roles do not require formal training, their job duties — and as a result their salaries — are generally less than those of a CNA.
If you are looking for more opportunities, you should consider becoming a CNA. Though both jobs deal with caring for patients that require a certain level of one-on-one care, their everyday job demands differ as well as the training they had to complete to obtain their certification.
To become a PCA, one must have at least a high school diploma, a certification is not always required; it depends on the state.
